Watermelon Wednesday with the Flock on Summer Homestead

Watermelon Wednesday came with rave reviews from the girls 🍉✨ Bea gave her approval with a happy cluck, and Hey‑Hey couldn’t resist adding his signature crow to the soundtrack. Nothing says summer on the homestead like a flock party around a bowl of melon!

We set a bucket of melon pieces on the shade-warmed porch step, and the hens slid in with their own little parade—beaks tapping, tails flicking, and that soft chorus of contented clucks that always makes me smile. The sun felt warmer today, and the garden glow was bright enough to make the tomatoes look almost red-gold in the light. After a quick splash of water and a scrape of the bowl with the spoon, the girls settled into quiet golden moments, pecking cheerfully between breezes that drifted from the corn rows and herb beds. Even the rooster stayed nearby, claiming a perch on the fence rail and giving that gentle, announcing crow as if to say, "This is our little summer festival."

The rhythm of a simple afternoon—sitting with a mug of iced tea, listening to the soft rustle of leaves, and watching the flock savor something as ordinary as watermelon—reminds me how deeply satisfying a slower, smaller life feels. It’s these small, bright moments that stitch together the days on our homestead: fresh air, friendly faces, and a bowl shared with feathered friends who keep the season honest and kind.
