Summer Treats for the Flock: A Hearth & Handcraft Moment
Share
Summer sweetness for the flock 🍉💕 Bea’s gleeful cluck and Hey‑Hey’s crow made this treat time extra perfect.
We set out a wooden tray on a warm afternoon, slices of cool watermelon tucked between chopped greens. The chickens came running, little pecks turning into excited clucks as the juices rolled down beaks and whiskers. It’s those small moments of laughter and dust in the coop that remind me why we slow down for a day and let the sun do its gentle work on the garden beds and on our patience.
In between treats, we checked the cucumber vines and softly praised the sun-warmed leaves. The flock didn’t need much—the simple joy of something sweet and refreshing is enough to keep their spirits high and their eggs steady. We reminded ourselves to offer plenty of fresh water and a shady corner for the heat of the afternoon, and to let the garden’s rhythms guide us into a slower pace.
Later, as the light softened, we cleaned up the scraps, tucked the chickens away, and shared a quiet moment over tea, listening to the hens’ soft clucks and the evening breeze. It’s not fancy, just everyday abundance—fresh air, simple treats, and the comfort of a well-loved homestead family. 🍃🐔
