Opal the Diva in Our Cozy Coop Journal

Opal the Diva in Our Cozy Coop Journal

Every flock has that one diva who believes the roosting bar is a chaise lounge. Tonight, Opal’s claiming her full spa treatment - feathers fluffed, wings spread, zero apologies. The others? Just grateful for the remaining six inches of real estate. 👑🐔

As the sun slips toward the hedges, I wander through the chicken run with a mug of tea, listening to the soft clucks and the satisfied rustle of straw. In our simple routine, the drama is part of the chorus—the way Opal preens and the others settle into their favorite corners, the way we all claim a little space to be our best, quirks and all. This is the heart of our homestead life: tiny moments that remind us to slow down and notice. We gather eggs, check the coop for any cold drafts, and tidy the nesting boxes so every hen can feel calm and cared for. And yes, we laugh at Opal’s grandiose strut—because a little theater keeps the garden bright and the day lighthearted. 🐣

I’m grateful for the eight to ten minutes of quiet after the bustle, when the yard smells like earth after rain and the sun sets pink on the hoops of the garden. It’s these small rituals—feathered fashion shows, a steady drip of fresh water, a loaf cooling on the counter—that remind us our homestead is not a race but a rhythm. If you’re building your own backyard flock, may your days be filled with sunny window sills, soft clucks, and a coop that feels like home.
